As We Grow

For many years, we have desired to purchase the land south of the Estes property. This parcel was part of a 96 acre tract and for various reasons this purchase was not possible. We were very fortunate that someone purchased approximately 88 acres of the east part of the tract, leaving approximately 8 acres on the front corner, which was exactly what we had always wanted.

The proposal was presented to you in a congregational meeting and your response was overwhelming. The money you have given, along with the August 31st pledges, will pay about half of the purchase. The pledges due by December 31, 2015 will pay the remaining half. Read more

The Devoted, Fanatic Christian Index (DFCI)

This past week I had an opportunity to travel to Belgium. While the trip was primarily business, there were a few opportunities for sightseeing. One of these excursions was to Aachen, Germany. I was excited to visit the city because of its history and because of the Aachen Cathedral, which Charlemagne had built near the end of the 8th century. This was my first trip to Europe and my first visit to such a historically significant city. I was like a kid in the candy store. Around every corner was another eye-opening, jaw-dropping adventure. The city’s history, art, architecture, sculpture, and most certainly, the cathedral, were impressive and far exceeded anything that I could have imagined. Read more

Toward the Future

Sunday was a very special day for the church at Estes. For more than a decade the Estes leadership has struggled trying to determine the best path forward for future growth of the congregation. We have realized that our classroom space is at or above capacity much of the time, our facilities for fellowship are at capacity for many of our fellowship gatherings and our auditorium is close to full capacity several Sundays throughout the year. The leadership has looked at many options including moving to another location, expanding our facilities to the north behind the Scott house, or attempt to purchase a few acres of land directly to the south of the current church property and add additional facilities in that direction. After looking at all of these options, the eldership has concluded that purchasing additional acreage to our south is the most cost effective path forward.

Tychicus — Delivering Messages

Tychicus was the type of person willing to do the seemingly lesser job so the overall purpose of Christ could be accomplished. He is mentioned five times in the New Testament. Yet, a close look at the times he is mentioned reveals his character. Tychicus was the type of person who was willing to do what needed to be done.

In Acts 20:4, the Bible says, “And Sopater of Berea accompanied him [Paul] to Asia–also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.” The passage mentions men who went with Paul to Asia and waited for him at Troas, including Tychicus. These men wanted to follow Paul’s example of mission work. Read more

Estes Youth Recap

It has been a busy summer for our youth group! We started out with a bang by going to Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio. We had 40 people go on this trip. We went to Jeffersonville, Indiana on Wednesday, May 21st, and worshipped with the Northside church of Christ. We spent the night at the church building, ar- rived at the amusement park at 10 a.m., and stayed until it closed at 8 p.m. Every- one had a great time and rode a lot of rides! We returned to the church building and spent the night at the church building again before heading home on Friday.

Christianity in Action – Summer Series 2014

How does it look when we put our faith to work? The Bible tells us how our Christianity can be seen in action.

“…be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” –  James 1:22

In order for Christianity to be meaningful, application of the Word is necessary. The emphasis of these studies is to examine practical ways Christianity is seen, not just understood. The various commands of the Bible demonstrate ways in which Christianity can be seen in action.

Lads to Leaders in Memphis

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. Isaiah 6:7-9

This weekend a number of our kids, their parents, and others who have been working hard for months will be heading to Memphis to represent the Estes congregation at the annual Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes convention. They have been studying scripture, practicing puppets shows, planning speeches, preparing for debate rebuttals, leading singing, creating scrapbooks and art projects, and working on a number of other skills. These skills are training them to have the confidence and zeal to serve the Lord’s church well into the 21st century.
